The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) encourages taxpayers to utilize the improved “Where’s My Refund?” tool on IRS.gov to check the status of their tax refunds. This tool provides three key pieces of information: confirmation of receiving the tax return, approval of the refund, and the issuing date of the approved refund for tax years 2023, 2022, and 2021.
During the busy filing season, the IRS emphasizes the importance of using Where’s My Refund? to quickly obtain necessary information without the need to call the IRS. The recent enhancements to the tool, funded by the Inflation Reduction Act, aim to streamline the process and offer the following benefits for the 2024 filing season:
- Messages with detailed refund status in plain language.
- Seamless access on mobile devices and the IRS2Go app.
- Notifications indicating whether additional information is required.
To use Where’s My Refund?, taxpayers need to enter their Social Security number or Individual Taxpayer Identification number, filing status, and the exact whole dollar amount of their expected refund from the original tax return for the respective year. Refund status information is typically available within 24 hours for e-filed tax year 2023 returns, three to four days for e-filed tax year 2022 or 2021 returns, and four weeks for mailed paper returns.
Taxpayers should be aware that the tool is updated once a day, usually overnight, eliminating the need for frequent checks. The IRS reminds taxpayers that filing electronically and opting for direct deposit is the fastest way to receive a refund.
